Teachers - 7C
Hello. My name is Elise Cockburn (pronounced Co-burn). This is my 6th year teaching French Immersion and my first year at William McDonald School. I have recently moved here from southern Ontario with my husband and our dog Stanley. Outside of school, I enjoy going for walks, reading, knitting, gardening and spending time with family and friends.
My first memories of the French language are of my Grandmother singing “Frère Jacques” to me before bed and watching Montreal Canadiens hockey games in French with my family. I learned French through the French Immersion program in Ontario from grades 1 to 12 and graduated with a Bilingual Certification. I then took French courses in University to continue my learning. Being bilingual helped me gain entry into the workforce in Ottawa and has always been an asset when applying to jobs. I completed my Honours Bachelor of Arts in Tourism and Environment at Brock University in St. Catherines, Ontario and my Bachelor of Education degree at York University in Toronto. I have also taken three Additional Teacher Qualification courses focusing on French As a Second Language.
My philosophy on education is:
Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn. (Benjamin Franklin)
I am a huge advocate that students need to be active participants in their own learning. Because of this, I focus on activity-based and inquiry-based learning in the classroom. I also believe in developing a growth mindset with students. The theory behind growth mindset is the belief that basic abilities can be developed through dedication, hard work and a positive attitude. This helps to create a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishments.
I look forward to getting to know the students, staff and community of William McDonald as the year progresses.
